help_outlineHow to Useexpand_more
  1. Enter proper or improper fractions in the input fields
  2. Select the math operation (+, −, ×, ÷)
  3. Click "Calculate" to see the answer
  4. View step-by-step solution and simplified result

Tip:

Sometimes math problems include the word "of," as in "What is 1/3 of 3/8?" The word "of" means multiply, so you would solve 1/3 × 3/8.

Use this fraction calculator for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Answers are fractions in lowest terms or mixed numbers in reduced form.

About Fractions

A fraction represents a part of a whole. If you had a dozen eggs and a recipe called for 5 eggs, you could say that you used 5/12 of a dozen eggs.

Fractions can also represent quantities between whole numbers. For example, if a restaurant is 5.3 miles away, that's 5 and 3/10 miles — more than 5 but less than 6 miles.

Negative Fractions

For negative fractions, insert a minus sign before the numerator. So if your fraction is -6/7, enter -6 in the numerator and 7 in the denominator.

  • A negative sign in the numerator OR denominator makes the fraction negative
  • A negative sign in BOTH the numerator and denominator cancel out (fraction is positive)

Adding Fractions

a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd

Example: 2/6 + 1/4 = (2×4 + 6×1) / (6×4) = 14/24 = 7/12

Subtracting Fractions

a/b − c/d = (ad − bc) / bd

Example: 2/6 − 1/4 = (2×4 − 6×1) / (6×4) = 2/24 = 1/12

Multiplying Fractions

a/b × c/d = (a×c) / (b×d)

Example: 2/6 × 1/4 = (2×1) / (6×4) = 2/24 = 1/12

Dividing Fractions (Keep, Change, Flip)

a/b ÷ c/d = (a×d) / (b×c)

Example: 2/6 ÷ 1/4 = (2×4) / (6×1) = 8/6 = 4/3 = 1 1/3

Addition

1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

Subtraction

3/4 − 1/2 = 1/4

Multiplication

3/4 × 2/5 = 3/10

Division

7/8 ÷ 1/2 = 1 3/4

quizFAQexpand_more
How do I add or subtract fractions with different denominators?expand_more
Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) — the smallest number that both denominators divide into evenly. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the LCD, then add or subtract the numerators. Finally, simplify the result to lowest terms.
How do I multiply fractions?expand_more
Multiply all numerators together to get the new numerator. Multiply all denominators together to get the new denominator. Then reduce the result to lowest terms. Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
How do I divide fractions?expand_more
Use 'Keep, Change, Flip': Keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, and flip the second fraction. Then multiply normally. Example: 2/3 ÷ 1/4 = 2/3 × 4/1 = 8/3 = 2 2/3.
What is a mixed number?expand_more
A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, like 1 3/4 (one and three-fourths). It's another way to express improper fractions where the numerator is larger than the denominator.
How do I simplify a fraction to lowest terms?expand_more
Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by the GCF. For example, to simplify 6/8: GCF(6,8) = 2, so 6÷2 / 8÷2 = 3/4.
Why can't the denominator be zero?expand_more
Division by zero is undefined in mathematics. A fraction represents division (numerator ÷ denominator), and dividing by zero has no meaningful result.
